How to be a RELAXED MOB (Mother of the Bride)

As my time writing on the site is coming to an end I thought I would pick out a few of the most talked about posts I have done, and this is one of them.

Now I am about to be a grandmother – well in about 4 months – it makes me smile when I re-read posts of Charlie and Ant’s wedding. This post takes me right back!!
Being a relaxed mother of the bride is not an easy task (at least in my case), so here are my suggestions for a relaxing and successful wedding day from the MOB’s perspective.

We’ll start with the MOB’s outfit.

1. Buy the dress well in advance; it could easily be the previous year as in my case.  There are huge advantages in doing this.  You have plenty of time and therefore no pressure. Charlie & I went shopping in the July sales, 2009, the wedding being in June 2010. Sales are great you have an excuse to buy a beautiful expensive dress but one that is reduced. You need to have an idea of style & colour.

I had decided that apricot was to be my colour – no clashing with the bride or bridesmaids.

Just remember you will be wearing the dress all day, so make sure you feel completely comfortable – nothing too tight or too warm. You can always add a jacket, wrap or cardigan but you can’t remove your dress if it’s too hot.

2. Don’t show your husband – it’s a nice surprise.

3. You can now get those little extras and accessorize your dress, shoes & hat, jewellery etc. Make sure your shoes are really comfortable and good enough to dance in. The joy of doing all this so long in advance is you can take your time. It took me almost 9 months to get the right shoes.

Try out lipstick colours too. All this can be done months before.

Now that your outfit is done and dusted you can relax. Put everything away in the wardrobe and forget about it.  It’s amazing when you bring everything out a week before the wedding how you’d almost forgotten what it was you bought. This is actually a bonus. You now have no time to worry about the outfit – too many other things to do.

4. Make sure you have your hair appointments booked well in advance.  Have your colouring & wash done a few days before the wedding. If you can get your hairdresser to come to the house on the wedding day to style both yours and the bride’s hair that’s great, and have it done so you have at least an hour to spare.

5. The day before we all (bride, bridesmaids & MOB) had a lovely long pamper in our local beauty salon. This is so important. You will be manicured, plucked, massaged and now you can truly relax.

This is because you have done ALL your LISTS & TIMETABLES, leave NOTHING TO CHANCE. This was mine below…

We had a delicious dinner and watched some football!!

7. Have a decent breakfast on the big day.

Hopefully by this point you will have succeeded in being a RELAXED MOB. It worked for me and I really enjoyed the wedding!!!
