This post comes off the back of a request from one of our regular readers who is having trouble finding her wedding underwear! A big thanks to Anna for getting in touch though – it’s something which is often forgotten about when the mind is so focussed on the dress and shoes!
While the idea of wearing romantic and sexy lingerie on your big day sounds exactly what you want, the practicalities of your dress may mean that is just not possible! However, we’ve got options for bridal lingerie to suit all on the blog today.
In the 50s underwear was all about glamour, nipped in waists and uplift where it mattered. After the war ended manufacturers experimented with new fabrics and styles, and it was the decade that introduced the push-up & bullet bras. If you’re wanting to capture the era of the 1950s it’s all about accentuating your womanly features and feeling like a Hollywood movie star.
Firstly for roaring retro and vintage appeal we have these beauties from What Katie Did (note - a must go to shop if you’re having a burlesque-themed wedding) a lingerie label inspired by the underwear typical of the 1940s and 1950s. Think bullet bras, authentic stockings and the sturdy corsets. Their designs are based on vintage patterns, adapted only slightly for modern figures, using authentic fabrics and even old-fashioned production methods wherever possible.
At their website (where they ship worldwide), in their catalogue and at their London boutique…
…retrophiles, vintage queens and lingerie lovers who appreciate the art of a circle-stitched cup, a wasp-waist, or a flash of fully-fashioned seam, can find everything their hearts’ desire.
Harlow bullet bra (£29.50) & suspender belt (£29.50), Hollywood bra (£35) and knickers (£25
Seamed stockings (£19), Madeline bra (£35) and knickers (£25)
Glamour waist clincher (£39.50) and bra (£35), Maitresse suspender belt (£29.50
Katie has also given us a sneak preview of the new Glamour shapewear range being launched in March. Just peachy! Perfect for brides looking for vintage bridal underwear.
If you’re not quite ready for authentic 1940s & 1950s undergarments, these items below are good alternatives for those of you who looking for flirty & fun bridal lingerie. I especially like the bows on this beautiful luxury silk underwear from Fred and Ginger – very pretty and romantic.
Marion Veil Back Bridal Knickers (£79 from Myla), Fred & Ginger Ivory Beau bra (£110) and knickers (£85)
There are also many options out there if you’re looking for something more practical. Given many brides opt for strapless dresses, and particularly if you’re going for a seamless look, I personally would recommend this strapless bra creation from Wonderbra (tried and tested). It’s not padded or underwired, but holds you in place perfectly using the technology of a hand-shaped structure that is moulded into the bra. It enables you to dance around without the fear of revealing more than your amazing dance moves!
Wonderbra Ultimate Strapless Bra in Ivory – £36 from John Lewis
Whatever bridal underwear you’re thinking about for your big day, make sure you’ve tried your dress on with ‘the chosen ones’.
Hopefully Anna you have a few ideas there, and hopefully everyone else too! Please do get in touch readers if you need us to do some fifties wedding research on your behalf! We’d love to help.
Hoorah for Friday! Have a great start to the weekend everyone. Tomorrow on the blog we have a fantastic 50s inspired real bride for you who got married in Las Vegas! Fantastic photos and I can’t wait to show you all.
